The Department of Emergency Medicine
Emergency Medicine is one of the newer
medical specialties and encompasses the evaluation, treatment,
and disposition of large numbers of patients with multiple and
varied problems-from simple and benign to more serious and
complex conditions. Emergency Medicine provides care 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year to all who seek it.
Emergency Medicine at The Brooklyn Hospital Center enjoys full
departmental status within the institution. Faculty members have academic
appointments through the Department of Medicine at the Weill Medical
College of Cornell University.
There is a departmental Chair, Vice Chair, and Assistant
Chair, as well as a separate full-time Program Director, Assistant Director and
Associate Director. There are thirteen full time academic
faculty, all of whom are board-certified or eligible in Emergency
Medicine. Of these, eleven are residency trained in Emergency
Medicine.
The Emergency Department of The Brooklyn Hospital Center serves as the primary training site. The ED is divided into three sections: an Adult area, a Pediatric area, and Urgent Care. There are approximately 65,000 total annual visits.
Altogether, almost 18 percent of patients arrive by ambulance.
About 16% of ED patients are admitted-20 percent of these to
critical care units. The patient population provides an
extraordinary spectrum of illness and injury and is
representative of the ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural
diversity of the City of New York.
